Episode 11 is here and we went all the way in. Black & Victorious open with crew socks and a GoGo Royalty hat, then get into a real conversation about Mumbo Sauce, Welcome to DC, and the DC bands that built the culture — Northeast Groovers and Junkyard. 0:04I can fix all of these of these Welcome to the Black and Victorious podcast.

0:28I am black.

0:29And I am victorious.

0:30And I'm also victorious. And I'm definitely also black. What's up, my guy? What up, my G? What's up? I know what it is. What if I talked to you earlier? I was trying to figure it out. What? You them the like the new age Cornichis. You remember Cornichis with the big old pockets? Did you like Cornici's? I mean, when back then, just like I used to like like Coca-Cola shirts and Kangos and Mickey Mouse dance and hammer paints. As soon as we started hammer pants.

0:57We just got here. We just got here, but it's good. I want to acknowledge a podcast ago. You was like, young, why you always going on me, young? And I said, I was like, bruh, you be going on me, young, but subtle. We opened the conversation. I was like, I'm black and I'm victorious.

1:14And you was like, Dose paint. I just feel like I had to go first because if I didn't go first, then I was gonna catch it regardless. See how you looking at me? You you you already looking. And listen. Welcome to the cruise stock game.

1:28Man, you scything it. I'm sticing it. I went over sticing it.

1:33Welcome to the cruise stock game. My man had on cruise stocks today, and you said, young these joints ya comfortable. I did say that. You did say that. I said they was comfortable. Right. Welcome to the cruise stock game. Why wouldn't you wear them now? You wore them.

1:49You bought them for me for my birthday. You got to put one pair of crew sock in my bag. That's crazy, dog. You took it out of your eight bag. You gave me one. I didn't force me to wear it, but I must say, them jumps was comfortable. Hey, look, you know, that's crazy. Fruit of a loom know how to make a stock.

2:04Exactly. When I knew I was it was the ones that I gave them to you, because you said you said, uh, you said, I think you gave me these, and then you took it off and I saw the tote. I said, Yep. Yep, I got the other seven at home.

2:16Hey, you listen, dog, you be rapping fruit of the loom, dog. I put them joints on and automatically felt 10 years older, yeah.

2:21Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. But I ain't even gonna go. I ain't gonna say nothing about you. I'm not like you. Go ahead, yeah. Go ahead. Say what you want. No, no, no. Your hat. All right. It's a nice hat. What'd that say on it, yeah?

2:33I think it said go-go royalty.

2:36Oh, because you because you roll, you go go. I feel like you are go-go royalty. That's you was gifted that hat. I was gifted the hat.

2:43So yeah, it's not something that I would like make and nah.

2:46See, I'm not I'm not being funny. Okay, yeah, I really feel like your contribution to go-go has is like is is enormous. I would appreciate I appreciate that, man. Actually, you know what I'm saying? I was size. I went to the um to the uh the roots picnic uh like last week, I guess. And uh, you know, the go-go set was super tight. For real. Super tight. Um, but they opened up with Welcome to DC. Hey, yeah, I was there.

3:15I was like, my man, that's it. You would have let you would have gone crazy if I would have just popped out. If you would have like jumped out of the bottom, yeah.

3:26Like a jacket.

3:27Like they could just stand there.

3:28Nah, that's tight, y'all. Like, just you know what I'm saying? Like, I've always been what I'm most impressed with, and this is not just the this is really just having a conversation, not just because you're here, but I've always been impressed with the music that Mumbo Sauce has created because of the what it speaks to to the culture around just a rec rec recognizing um the community side and actually also recognizing like messaging and imaging and like power of words and what it can do to a community. So, like, welcome to DC is like an anthem, yeah, because of what it's actually saying. Like, you know what I'm saying? So always been like, yeah, I've been a fan of Mumbo Songs before I even knew they was you. I appreciate that, man. Yeah, that is true, dawg.

4:13I didn't even know that was you. We didn't we didn't know each other, right? Yeah, I ain't know you, champ. Yeah, so it was like it wasn't like you you met me when you when when we were introduced to each other, you know I was in Mambo sauce, and you knew that I was in Mamo sauce after the introduction.

4:32Yeah, I had no idea. Yeah, oh that's crazy, yo. Yeah, that that's actually an interesting question, yeah, because you UCB, yes, uh UC UCB has always been one of my favorite bands because um they used to play like the first open mic, they was the open, they was the open, they was the band, right? The house band for uh for the open mic. And I just remember them like putting our group name in like the music and all that. I've always been like a huge fan of UCB. Uh and Trey, Trey, if it and you and Trey helped you graduate. Yeah, Trey, my man. You know what's funny is I don't know if Trey even knows. I don't know if I've ever sat with him and told him.

5:15I think I think that that's um I think that that's something that should be said. Like I think that, you know, I think that that's cool that you can say, hey, because people don't really know the impact that they have, and they just move it through the world, just being themselves. And I think that, you know, you letting someone know that, hey, you being yourself, you doing this, this helped me to get here. You know what I'm saying? Appreciation is I saw something today that said men don't necessarily want like desire. Like, don't we don't care to be dis I don't know if the the word was desire, but what they said was one of the biggest things that men really love is appreciation. One of the biggest things. Now I'm thinking about that. It's like like if you do something, you know, you don't necessarily like as far as okay, being a father. Yeah, you know, of course, this is what you're supposed to do. Yeah, you know, you made a child, you you supposed to raise it, you know. So we're not looking for recognition, meaning that you know, you going around, you know, but we want to be appreciated for the effort that we put into it. That's true, you know what I'm saying?

6:21That that's probably is true. Like, I don't necessarily need uh uh a celebratory thing. I think that's why fathers be so chill on Father's Day, yeah. We just want to know that there is value at, but we don't necessarily need the red carpet pulled out, yeah, yeah, yeah.

6:41Like I was thinking the other day I wonder why that is.

6:45I might need to change that up because I want a seven day in the international country. Celebrate me, dog. Nah, dog, give me the certificate. I'm on the metal. Nah, I'm with the I take the trip.

7:03I'm on the middle feed. I don't want the middle of the trip. I take the trip. I'll take the trip though. Nah, I want the trip and the medal. Okay, if we can get both, cool.

7:13New rule. New rule, new rule, new rule, sell celebration, celebration and recognition simultaneously. Send me on a trip and make sure I put my medal on when I'm on the airport. Now you say that, but you you you faking. Better hunt it.

7:30I you know how I know you're faking? How? Because you don't know how to take compliments. You don't sell you don't know how to be celebrated. You don't know, you can't, it makes you feel uncomfortable. That's something to think about too. Why does it make you feel uncomfortable? To be celebrated, if somebody put like if your family was was going to school. I just want to acknowledge I don't like the fact that you're bringing this up.

7:51What? It's making me uncomfortable. Nah.

7:57But that's something to think about.

8:00That's something to think about. It just it's it's weird.

8:03Yeah, so I think that the same thing would happen if you were celebrated, you know, for things that you But do you think that's a man thing? I don't think it's a man thing. I do. I do. I I think that it is mostly a man thing. I don't want to say that, you know, that some women aren't aren't like made that way, but I think it's mostly a man.

8:24How do you how do you respond with someone when it's your birthday and people sing you happy birthday? It's weird. I don't know what to do with my hands. The happy birthday song. The happy birthday song is might be the worst song on the planet. I've never seen anybody get sung to on happy birthday and them not look weird.

8:42Yeah. You just sitting there, everybody's looking, getting serenated. You don't know what to do. You're staring at the candles, you're not looking at people. You just can't make a witch.

8:53I don't my brain is doing some and stuff. I can't make a witch. And then I gotta close my eyes and make a wish. And then you're always weird to me whether or not we're gonna send the extended version of happy birthday or the short version.

9:04And then when you send the extended version, if you send well, first of all, we don't know if we're gonna send the regular one if we send or the Stevie Wonder one. And when you send this, when you sing the Stevie Wonder one, is people gonna clap. You know the little pop. See? Yeah, it's just second new rule, yeah.

9:20Second new rule, what? No more happy birthday song. We're done. Unless we're tired, y'all. But think about the go-go, young. What what was your favorite? Who's your favorite band? I think that I mean outside of Mambo songs.

9:36Yeah. I think that I have a favorite band, but I just want to put something out there. I I think that my opinion, although I base it off of I think I base it off of musicianship. Okay. A lot of it is biased because of the relationship. Okay. So you just rhyme too, by the way. Okay. You know what I'm saying? So um Northeast groove was my first, like, so I do I remember I was young and I went to see Junkyard at the parade, but I don't rem I just remember being in awe. So I probably like Royal's age. But I it yeah, but it stuck. Junkyard's been dull. Junkyard, I remember, I remember it. It was in Southeast. My cousins lived in Southeast. We came there, they had a parade. Man, when I tell you, this is when Junkyard was young, young, young. They like how young? Like, I want to say, I I don't want to get it wrong, but they was like 10, 11, 12. Junkyard has been cranking forever. Dang. Young. When I tell you, they was like Michael Jackson, like the Jackson 5. That young. That like they were the Jackson 5 of DC. When I I will never forget that day, and I don't remember anything else about that age. Exactly. Just remember junk y'all. Just remember the junk y'all parade, and then they had a show, and everybody was going crazy. But I don't think that I like I was just in awe by the response. You know what I'm saying? And I knew the songs, but you know, radio and all of that, it just wasn't as popular. Like I couldn't get to their songs, whatever. And so I remember the day that I truly fell in love with GoGo. Um was I went to see Northeast Groovers at Magnumur. Okay. Blew my mind. Blew my mind, dog. From that point on, I I I just started going, you know, doing stuff with Gogo, all of that. And um, you know, I just thought Northeast Groovers were very creative.

11:43Okay, so Groovers.

11:44And then I moved with me, Hug, and Maestro. We had a home together. Okay. So, you know, I'm biased. And I'm and Kyrie's in the band. Yeah. Had a relationship with Miss Pratt, Mr. Pratt, which was Kyrie's mother and father, who was like the managers of Northeast Groovers. I know everybody in Northeast Groovers, you know what I'm saying? It's it's family. So I think Northeast Grooves hostage. It's not even, I think, Northeast Groovers is my top band.

12:12That's tight, huh? I remember we went to go see Grooves. That's the first time I went to go see Grooves when you took me to the reunion show, I guess.

12:18Yeah, yeah. At the uh reunion show, they they've been playing the okay.

12:23I didn't, it was it was a show. But you was telling me about all of that that you just told me. Yeah, and I realized how much I didn't necessarily I mean I listened to Go Go, but I don't have that type of memory in my head or experience with Go-Go the same way that you have. I f I I felt like I got introduced more to Go Go. My wife says this to me all the time when I got to college. Yeah, because in high school, my my brother Truth was like the exposure to music, and all he did was listen to hip-hop. So we had like boxes, but my favorite band is back though.

12:58I I feel you. I mean, I like I said, I think mine is a bias because of the relationship. And that's fine. If we think about it, I mean, junk, y'all, I go like so when I played high school ball, um, we was, you know, we won state championships multiple times. Did you have to say that?

13:15Is that part of the story?

13:16No, I mean, I'm just saying that so when we were if we would love if we lose a game, we can't talk on the ride back to the school. Okay. You know what I'm saying? But if we win a game, uh-huh, then we party it. And I always had to sing, With on my heart, I love you. I always they always was playing the drums on the what's your name? You don't you don't know what song that is? Well, I I know I know that song. You know it, but you you know it as Anita Baker. Yeah. Oh, yeah. You definitely got introduced to go go, well, junkyard, that was one of junkyards. I feel like I've heard it before. Yeah, it was cranking. But you was the singer? I was a singer on my high school bus. And I sung in my high school band, and I played in this band called Before the Gas Station was the gas station. We was the little rascals. Then we gotta change the reaction. Yeah, I got history. I can tell. And I was supposed to. I tried out for Northeast Groovers because 32. He actually left the band. Okay. And I tried out for him, and I was up for it, but this was right after I graduated from college, and I had an offer to go um work for IBM Global Services.

14:29Okay, I like the way you just said IBM Global Services. I mean, you said the whole name. You could just say IBM. Yeah, okay.

14:36I had to say what it was. Nah, it's all good. It's global services.

14:39That's funny. IBM was computers out. What?

14:43No, I mean, uh how you know that's a valid question, yeah.

14:55What you mean it's a valid question? Like, how computers been out since you've been alive.

15:00Nah, nah, nah. You know that you didn't really use computers in the same way. You know, you that's what I'm saying. Like, you know, you didn't have a computer at home. My mother, I did. You did, yeah. Which one? Uh like the MS DOS. This I'm saying, yeah. But I'm talking about like were they out. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like the only thing we did on the computer is like when we would kind of load in the AOL. Yeah. I feel like you got AOL when. Be honest. I don't know when I got AOL. Which you wouldn't, which yeah, you got okay, you ain't gotta tell me the year. But like I feel like high school we had like we would we had the little dial up. I know that computers was um uh they wasn't out with in middle school for you. I know they weren't.

15:53I took so this all of this sounds like you know a little brag of dogs.

15:58You played the organ trail.

15:59What? The organ trail. No, I took a typing class, and so I learned how to type real fast at an early age, and I took the typing class in high school.

16:09Okay, all right, but it's funny how much computers kind of have advanced, yeah, right? Because we, you know, we was on dial up in high school and well, couldn't get on the phone while the internet was on. It was going crazy on you, you know what I'm saying? But once you got that connection, it was out you was you know what I'm saying? Remember, we used to print the paper with the little sides, you had to take off the little circles, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, but now I feel like computers is everywhere we go. Like they had we got we we got computers right here. Yeah, we got we walk with computers, we go, you know what I'm saying? Computers everywhere, and so it's funny that we get older, and I feel like everything that you can do on your cell phone, you can do on the computer now. You know what I'm saying? But are there things?

16:52Yeah, almost.

16:53So that's what I are there things that that you can do on your phone that you don't do, you only is this things that's just a computer thing versus a phone thing?

17:05Just a computer thing. I think for me, long version typing is just a computer thing. I hate long version typing on the phone. Like a paper? Yeah, like any anything that's like, you know, like a couple of pages long or even a page long. I I I can't stand long typing on the on the phone.

17:25Yeah, like when people write long text.

17:27Yeah.

17:28Nah, I'm not doing that.

17:29That's because you only like with typing, you got to do that.

17:32But I feel like people do that, and I you know that's a huge conversation around like women. I text them all this, and then the dude texts back, okay. Yeah. They'd be blown. Or K. Yeah, I'm not responding at all. You type out K? K. Yeah. Nah, not I've never wrote K.

17:48I was just asking. I was just asking.

17:50But yeah. Um, well not, would you you got some? Well, I do a lot of things just on my phone. So I I like I book flights.

18:01Yeah, so yes, uh, I haven't graduated to that yet. We actually had a conversation about that like two weeks ago. You don't book, you can't book flights on your phone? I've never booked a flight on my phone. I can, but I've never done it. It doesn't seem like it doesn't seem like a phone task. It doesn't seem like a phone task.

18:21Yeah, so I booked flights. I um I will book hotels. I will do anything but write a paper on my phone. I will, you know, of course, I'm sure you do online shopping on your phone.

18:37Yes.

18:38Um but you know one thing that I hate doing on the computer? What? Social media. Wow. It just doesn't seem like social media is supposed to be on the computer. It feels like it's just supposed to be on your phone.

18:52Social media, for me, to be honest, I would respond more to like comments, or I I'll engage more if it was computer. Because once again, like I d I I I I don't even think it's just long typing. I just don't like typing on my phone. You know what I'm saying? I'd rather talk to my phone versus typing.

19:20But I thought you were a super typer, you know. You learned in high school.

19:22No, on the computer. Oh, okay. Not on the nobody teaches you how to type.

19:26How many words per minute do you type?

19:28I don't I haven't done a test, but it's like 50, 50, 50, something part of it. Probably more than that. Probably more than that at this point. When I was young, I think it was like 30, 35. You know what I'm saying? What you about to look up with the average is?

19:43Nah, I ain't gonna look it up. I ain't gonna do you like that. But I just think that uh you think I'm lying?

19:49No. Okay. I don't know. That note is kind of suspect. Stretching the truth. Stretching the truth? Yeah. Have you seen me type? Have you seen me type? What's the joint with with the people in the court? You know what I'm saying? A stenographer? Yes. I can stenographer the hell out of something. I can stenographer. I don't know what's the what's the what's the base word for? I can style the hell out of something.

20:18Yo, where did that come from? I'm just saying. So I, you know, I feel like, you know, we on our I I guess we, you know, one more episode, we're gonna bring our season, yeah. To a close. I for our season one to a close. I've been pretty excited about like uh the growth of the podcast, the conversations that it started. You know, one of the things that was super important for for me and for you and for I for us is to be able to uh create conversation within this space that is not um that that anybody in your family can listen to, yeah. That's not degrading to our folks, that you know, has um you know substantial conversation while at the same time to some degree entertaining. So it's been dope, like this this ride and this process. And what's also dope is like how often people uh look at the clips. Yes. They be, you know what I'm saying?

21:14People be they be clipping it up, they be they be clipping it up. Clipping it up. I mean, so so let me ask you a question. You see a lot of clips, not from us, but from people in general. I'm just talking to people in general. Okay. Do you go to their podcast or do you go to the platform where that piece of content was clipped from?

21:40Why are you asking that question?

21:43No. No, I don't. What would make you so we let's dissect this here. What would make you go to that to that place to listen to the full conversation or the full product? Do nothing. Absolutely nothing. You can do nothing. Yeah, that's that's so that's our issue.

22:13That's a problem to solve. You're right. You're right. That's our problem to solve. We might just be clipped up. Might just be a clip conversation. Because I'm gonna tell you why. I know what I mean. I know what I mean, yeah. I just don't maybe in the month of July when I can chill out for a second. But it's too much going on. And plus, I don't, I'm not, I'm not, I can't work with stuff in the background. With words in the background, I'm not that type of dude. Some people can listen and do stuff and work and stuff like that. Yeah, I can't work with words. Like I need silence or instrumental.

22:43Yes, I feel you. Words drive me crazy because they distract you. Yes, and you end up singing along and all this type of thing.

22:50No, no, no, I get frustrated. So as a teacher, this is funny. Even as an you know, as a facilitator, when I'm doing presentations and working with folks, adults, yeah. If I'm talking or somebody else talking, and somebody starts talking, I can't, I'll be lunching. Lunch. Because I it just and I'll be like, ho, ho, ho, ho. Everybody be quiet. Somebody talking. Like, and it'd be a room full of adults. Because I can't, it doesn't work with me, bruh. I think that might have helped me as a teacher. So, you know, so words don't I can't do words.

23:20You sound mean. I know. You sound like a mean teacher, and I know you and and I know you you not, like, I know you care.

23:28Well, I will say this. I had this conversation the other day with a group of educators from DC uh yesterday. It was actually yesterday. I was working with them on Reflected on the end of the year, and I asked them, How what legacy do you want to leave? Like, how will your students remember you from your from your relationship this year? And most of the teachers, if not all of them, was like said good things, like they're gonna remember me for da-da-da-da-da-da. Yeah, and I, you know, I don't think that's the truth. Um, I think some of your kids, so when you talk about this conversation of me, yeah, I think the majority of the young people and adults that I've interacted with will probably see me in the way in which I see myself trying to be like, oh yeah, you good, you know what I'm saying? Peaceful, you loving. But there's some kids out there who be like, I can't stand that dude. And there's adults who like I can't young, he was a bam.

24:17So you do okay, oh I'm in the school. Well, I'm not gonna switch the school. I'm not gonna switch the subject. Okay, that's cool. Um do you think do you do you think you got haters?

24:29That's a good question.

24:31Um like somebody who really can't, like, they can't stand you. Yes. You do?

24:38Yes. Yes, I have to. Do you know them? No. I will I would I don't know if I know them. Uh young. I'm a I could I can break the third wall, fifth wall, or whatever. You can just do it. Because our my son is engineering right now. Yeah, and this bamba's ain't got haters, and he raised his hand. He is a bamba for that. That's what I'm like. I mean, always say, don't talk about me in the podcast.

25:08But he talked about, yeah.

25:09Yeah, he just raise his hand and say, Oh, I got haters. But nah, I think I got to. I got I don't I don't mind I don't mention them or mind them. They don't come up in my head, yeah. But I think with anything is yin and yang. If you got love, you got hate.

25:22Yeah.

25:22I'm I'm sure you think. I'm sure.

25:24I think I was naive to it until you know, until I got on that dumb show. And I know, well, it was before then, but I was naive to it for a very long time. Oh, yeah. And I think that even my life, I tried to like live a life where I was pleasing people to a point where I I was trying not to have any haters. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, oh, I learned to not do that.

25:52Yeah, that's that's that's interesting, dog. Like, I think I had that when I became an assistant principal at first. I was a teacher turned into an assistant principal. And when you're a leader, it's just like it gets, and I was young, I was like 28 when I became an assistant principal. Yeah, so I was very it took me a while to adjust to the fact that like everyone's not gonna like the decisions you make or kind of what you do. Oh, but I'm pretty sure I had haters. Yeah, yeah, but it's you know, it's part of the course, you know what I'm saying?

26:15Like, I mean, it depends on what day it is for me for like for you to have like a hater right beside you. You know what I'm saying? Because some of the days when you training, um like, yeah. Yeah, but I feel like you deserve to be hated. Why? Because you you just you just be lunching. What you mean? You just be lunching sometimes when you when you training. Like, you know, I ain't talking about the cycling stuff. I ain't talking about all that. Like you you great with that. I'm talking about when it's just me and you. Oh, in the gym? Yeah, in the gym. Oh, yeah. I ain't saying, you know, nah, outside of the gym, nah. But in the gym, yeah, I could I could, you know. Hate is a strong word, though. It's all good though. Hate is a strong word.

27:01My therapist once told me, yeah, that it's those those very severe emotions, they okay to say too. Okay. Yeah, like you can you can you can feel that severe hate and be like, ah, I love them the mind, yeah.

27:15Oh, okay. I thought you was gonna do some old flipper stuff. My therapist once told me that it's not like when someone says something, it's more about them than it is you.

27:28Nah, that's not what I was gonna say. All right, my bad. It's all good though, yeah. Hey yeah, so that's interesting that we're talking about this hate thing and this conversation. I think that's part of what I wonder. Um, so I be online, right? Alright, so you know I I was a history major. Yes. And part of being a history major in school is that they teach you how to argue. Right. You have to be able to stand a point and have your uh data or facts to back up your point. Right? I mean, you're exculing me because I didn't know that that was a part of the state. So history, that's really what it's about. Like, is a discipline of figuring out how to find the truth.

28:13Okay.

28:14And being able to pull sources to figure out and support whatever your truth is. So that's the discipline of history is to read primary source documents, figure out kind of what's going on, make a statement, support that statement. That's what history is. And people might have a different difference of opinion, and you gotta figure out how to argue your side and listen to the other person's side and kind of go back and forth.

28:37I don't want to take you off. So go ahead, continue. No, but you it's just wild. Like what you're saying, you know, I'm always listening to you intensely. Yeah, I just don't understand how history is something that you come, you know, you suppose it's just teaching you how to argue, and then you find facts, and then your you find sources that back up your facts and all of this type of stuff, but then you say that, you know, people have differences of opinion.

29:10Yeah, because the source to some degree can influence like your bias comes in, like the ways in which like my bias can actually help, uh, can dictate the things that I see and how I how I take something in. So me and you can see the exact same thing, but the bias in my like how I'm I kind of approach the world impacts my opinion about a particular thing, which is how you get a difference of opinion, right? Like somebody can see a fight happen in the street and they like, oh, it's because of this, and then they'd be like, Oh, it's because of that. We saw the same thing, but yeah, difference of opinion. And so history tries to teach you how to manipulate primary sources to be able to defend and also associate and talk about your bias, right? To be able to um explain what truth is. But what I notice online is that there's a um there seems to be polarizing ideas, and it doesn't allow for a space for dialogue. And so what dialogue, what history tries to do is try to create a healthy dialogue to be able to kind of push yourself to one side or the next. But what I feel like the culture is now is like if you disagree, then I'm blocking you. If you don't agree with my stance or my ideas or my notion, you get blocked. Or you're a hater. Yeah. Or yeah, you're yeah. And I'm trying to figure out if there's a nuance in there, like if there is room for disagreement, but just not disrespect, or even is my disagreement disrespect.

30:53I think that yes to both. I think that there is a level of disagreement that feels disrespectful. Like if we take, you know, politics, you know, not politics in general, but you know, the the the the person that's in the White House. Yeah. If someone fully supports him, I I I I look at it in a in a way. Yeah. You know, but like a regular argument about you know, LeBron James, or what's the favorite ice cream, or you know what I'm saying? Like, I think that those things should be able to be talked about, like on a smaller scale. But I I just think people are just so it's it's just so polarizing that. And the space, everyone is I think this it's lazy. Like, I think that that's what it is. It we are we are in a space where we are having lazy dialogue, which means that I'm gonna say what I say, not just lazy, but also stubborn. Okay, so I'm gonna say what I say, you know what I'm saying, and I'm gonna stick to my side. I'm not going to go any further to try to give you the sources and all of these things that you're talking about, and there's no way that you can change my mind. Yeah, like I'm already thinking that already while we're going into this argument.

32:19Yeah.

32:20So I'm being stubborn because I know that regardless of what you say, even if you say something that is, you know, wise and intelligent, and I'm like, oh, that makes sense. I'm not gonna tell you that. I'm gonna stand my ground. And you know what I'm saying? I'm I'm I'm not going to come with enough information to try to change yours per se.

32:40Why why do you think that is? What what makes you why why do people feel like I I don't I don't think that the world creates a safe space for disagreement. That's interesting. I you know, that's a that's an interesting take around um the world not necessarily creating a space for disagreement. I I I think that there are times I think you pulled up some very good examples around like politics, around when it is damaging to groups of people, yeah or your belief in it could be harmful or threatening to groups of people, yeah. That we it I don't know if we can find a middle ground around that. But I also think that like there has to be, there's always been healthy dialogue with politics. There's always been political debate since this country was established. Do I think is it the best I theme or idea around political debate? No, I think that capitalism, you know, this quote-unquote democracy that America has is definitely super flawed, but it was quote unquote uh, you know, political parties, this idea of like opposing sides, opposing views of how things should be run. It's always been like trying to create or spur debate to some degree. I think though it has gotten to a point, well, it's I don't know. It probably has always been there. Yeah where it's been, yeah. Let me let me say that. Yeah, that's how I feel.

34:10I feel like my bad. Go ahead, my bad, because I want to.

34:13No, no, no. I think well, now that I reflect, yeah, it's always been, you know, rich against poor. It's always been a money, a money grab, you know what I'm saying? In this in this country, it's always been about poverty, people in poverty, and people with wealth. And I think the politics are conversations to kind of do that. But I was I was more so trying to have a discussion about like how do you respectfully disagree with someone online. So I wrote something on, I've been trying to do a better job of commenting on things that I feel should, you know, I should have a comment on. Because what I know what I notice is haters comment. Yeah, haters comment and then people, and then I let me tell you the people that I love. Are the comedians, young? Yeah, the comments, yeah, comment section top tier. But when I think there's conversation to be had, I really think people who have something to say need to start saying something. So I've taken it upon myself that I'm gonna try to start actually commenting on stuff. And I commented on a Tony Baker post. Tony Baker posted about um his response, his first time when he was hit on by a man. And uh, you know, people in the comments were like, he posted a Denzel Washington clip, and I forget what movie it is, when there was a home uh a gay man who hit on him in his response. And Tony Baker was like, yo, I you know, the first time I was hit on by a man, I was, you know what I'm saying? I was kind of aggressive, and I apologized to the dude because I felt like I wasn't and so he talked about this idea that men, why do they have to respond in a very aggressive way if a man hits on them? And I was like, my my my response was sort of like I think manhood, the way in which men have been reared to defend manhood is with aggression, right? Oh, he tried to play, I'ma fight him, or he disrespected me. I wanna, you know what I'm saying, I wanna get big rather than this idea of uh defending manhood. Um you can still, I think, defend man or is that manhood? Or defend your ideas about your beliefs in a gentle way rather than being aggressive. And so I said that. And the dude said that men are naturally aggressive. And and that pissed you off. I felt like he was respectful. Okay. He put a little emoji, but he I felt like he was respectful. Which kind of emoji did he put? Like, I think the little man with his hand on his head, like the reason why he responded like that, because men are naturally aggressive. But then he backed out of the conversation because I was asked, I asked him, are men naturally kind or gentle or loving to their children? He didn't. He didn't respond. He didn't respond.

36:48But see, that's my thing. So when you were talking, I realized that have we ever been taught how to respectfully disagree? From childhood. Have you ever been taught how to respectfully disagree? When you was a young kid and you had a disagreement or you disagreed with your parents, yeah, you didn't have a a a kind of say-so. You didn't you couldn't come to them respectfully and say, you know, I don't want to do this, and I and it was because of this, and it was it was like, no, you're gonna do what I tell you to do. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I I don't think that we have what would teach us how to respectfully disagree.

37:33I don't know. But I don't think that we just uh your history class helps you. Helped me a lot, yeah.

37:39But everybody doesn't take history as seriously.

37:42I I agree. I agree. So I think that the muscle of um I think that there's norms and values, and I think this is a pretty good conversation. I think about like norms and values in which you stand on. As long as my norms and values are not endangered or disrespected or stepped over, right? I I still think there's this opportunity for open dialogue.

38:01I remember that you told me because you know, I learned a lot from you.

38:07Um I took that compliment.

38:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. I ain't even lying. Uh I remember I was talking about something with Royal and you basically said to her basically in so many words, to her, that is a big deal. It looks minuscule to you, but to her, that is like her world.

38:31Yeah.

38:32I think that that's how it is when it comes to you know the disagreements. Like what you think is something, okay, I can get past that. Like, we just having a conversation. Yeah, like somebody takes extremely personal. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Somebody like, oh, you know, something like you saying, is men kind, is men this, is men that you know. He he he he probably stepped out because he knew that he didn't have an answer, and it just meant and he don't he like, oh, you know, trick trick bag.

39:03Oh, he's talking back. Yeah, oh I don't have anything masculine to come with can't beat this.

39:08Yeah, and I'm quite sure it frustrated him because he doesn't know how to. You know what I'm saying? He doesn't, you know.

39:16Yeah, I think I just think that that's uh I don't know if the internet influences or encourages uh uh a separate the polarization because I think your feed, the way in which our feeds are set up, it's it feeds us the things that feeds your belief. So to see a belief that is not yours on your timeline or hearing somebody say something, I think that it has created our minds to be even more serious about disagreement because we are only fed the things that we agree with. That's how we start liking, that's how we press the like button.

39:51I totally agree, I totally agree, but I don't know how you how you break that because not only is it the internet, it is also your mind. Yeah, like if you have a desire to do something, then your mind will find all of these things to convince you to do it. You know, when they tell you if you believe you can do it, you can. If you believe you can't do it, you're no, if you believe you can do it, you're right. Yeah, if you believe you can't do it, you're right. Yeah, that's because whatever you're believing, your mind is out here trying to gather data to back that up. Yeah, but I believe I can spell. And I can't. I young. If you keep telling yourself that you might be able to. Nah, what?

40:35Spell. I've been trying, bruh, since I was a kid, young. Bruh, bruh. Spelling, young. Spelling as an adult. Were you able to spell as a kid though? No, I couldn't spell as a kid. I still I struggled when I was a teacher spelling. I used to write on a board. I'd be like, my first day of class, I would tell the kids, like, look, I think I'm pretty smart, but spelling, it's not my bag. If I spell the word wrong, it's your job to tell me how to spell it right. And I would not, young spelling dog.

41:10All right, let's go with this. What is your what is the easiest word? Like, what is the word that you think everybody would consider easy that you have a difficult time spelling?

41:21Wednesday. Wednesday, take me through there, young spell it, spell it, y'all. W E D. This is why I get tripped up, young. Oh, day young. Oh my god, young that you don't take me through there, dog. Wednesday. Oh my god, young specific, young, specific, young and either young and eye. I don't know the rule.

41:49Young, young there. You know what I'm saying? I know there, there, there. No, I know there, there, no, no, it's just not. I I just don't know where they go. Like, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. Punish you.

42:01Punish and be trash to you, young. Young, and young spell check is the greatest invention, but never put the brain under my word.

42:10Yeah, I I feel you, but I think that I've taught my spell check to be confused.

42:15Oh, that's the word.

42:17When you spell a word, spell check can't help you. Spell check be like, nah, dog, you launched it.

42:23You know, you spell check cannot help. If you if you spell a word wrong, right, and you know how it gives you options, you know, like if you spell a word wrong and there's no options there, uh-huh, it'll just go with the word. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I think over time it'll just remember that word. It'll be like, oh, this is just how you spell it.

42:45We just gonna let it be. We just gonna let it be. Wait till we get an update. Wait till we get an update, we might do stuff with it.

42:52Dog, young wide. I used to be, I remember as a kid, yo, that's trauma, dog. I remember as a kid, y'all, people would go into the spelling bees like my classmates. Be like, yeah, I'm going to the spelling bee. But first they would do the class B. You know what I'm saying? The class B, let you know who's gonna go to school B. I'm out first round every time.

43:13All right, we're gonna do this.

43:14Y'all don't be a bam, y'all. We're gonna do this, yeah. Please, y'all. Don't do nothing, young.

43:18Hold on, hold on, hold on. I'm gonna google something.

43:20Hold on.

43:21You can do it too, y'all.

43:23I wanna do it. If that wall spell it, I wanna do it. Cause people gonna think, young, cuz all here it goes, yo.

43:30Yeah. Hello.

43:32Young spelling is not my forte. And the thing is, I read a lot. But you say when you read a lot, you should be able to spell better. I just be jumping over. I don't know, man.

43:44Yeah, that's what they say. But evidently it's do you have words you can't spell? Yes, yes. I mean, when they the longer they get, the more difficult it is. Oh, forget about the long.

43:55I don't even try no more. Yeah, it's if I lean on technology, like I lean on technology, remember phone night.

44:00All right, here we go. Oh, so this is the thing. You know what I'm saying? Don't don't ever like it. I think we talked about this too. Uh Mississippi.

44:11If I can't say in my uh Crick a letter, crick a letter, I Crickle letter, crick a letter, I hump back, hump back, I yep. I'm done. That's how I spell banana.

44:21I what's the what's the banana song?

44:23B A A A A S this B. I mean every time I gotta say bananas, I be singing like a bug.

44:30You know what I mean? Aggressive. B aggressive beat beat aggressive beat e A G G R E S.

44:38Here we go, yeah. I depend on songs, yeah.

44:42Yeah, all right. So look, I'm gonna throw them out here and see we go. What uh restaurant. You can give me some too. Five for five.

44:56Restaurant. Restaurant S T A U R A N T.

45:02You got it.

45:02Get money, get money.

45:04You got it.

45:05I need young. Send it to my cash app. Everyone I get right. Young.

45:09Oh, I can trip you up.

45:10No, don't come on, man.

45:12I okay, okay. Recommend.

45:14Oh, this one. This is one right here. Oh, I don't know if it's two C's or one. Rec R E C Rec O. Oh. Oh, Rec O M-E-N-D.

45:28You missed the M. Double M's. Yeah, it was double M's. Damn. Uh this one. I feel like this one should be easy.

45:35At the red line.

45:36Definitely.

45:37Nope. Nope. Nope. Definitely. Nope. I swear to God, I can't tell. And I use definitely so much when I write it. I'm not even trying it.

45:50I know D-E-F in at least. That's it. So go ahead with the N-Le. No, no. No, no, go ahead. You say D-E-F. I E D F I E N T L Y. Definitely T Y L Y something like that.

46:05It's D E F I N I T E L E Y.

46:08The pinning on spell check. Help me, please.

46:12Alright. I was just the last one. This is over with, man.

46:15I'm getting hot.

46:17Accommodation.

46:18Come on. Come on, dog.

46:24Yeah, this is. Come on, dog.

46:27This is hilarious. Accommodation. You're right.

46:37Okay, you said A C C O. Yeah, it's two M's, though.

46:44No. All right.

46:46There you go. Look at that.

46:46I'm two for one for five.

46:48You're one for five. Yeah. Good job. Your turn. All right. Go ahead. All right.

47:01Encyclopedia.

47:03I'm going to try it though. I don't even know how to spell it, so I don't know if you're right or not. So I'm going to be good. E-N-C inside. Y O P E D I A.

47:15Nah, I feel like you left the L out.

47:17I did leave the L out. Yeah. I spelled Encyclopedia. Yep, that's cool.

47:22You're getting punished. How about Britannica?

47:25Oh, man. Yeah. B-R-I-T-T-A-N-I-C-A.

47:29Oh, you spelled that all the way wrong. For real? Yeah.

47:32Oh, I didn't even put the hold up. B-R-I-T-T. Nah, do you launch it with the two T. B-R-I-T. Uh-huh. A. Britann. N. Uh. C A. Nah, you left another N out. See? I don't first of all. Who? I don't go ahead. Go ahead. Keep going. Cause I got something to say after this.

47:54Nah, we go ahead and say it, yeah.

47:55Yeah, I don't understand where these people be getting all of this stuff from, too. Like, why do they say put two N's here and then, you know, like certain things don't sound right. Don't sound like they supposed to be written.

48:07Yeah, yeah. I I it's just, you know.

48:09I feel like the King English was, I don't know, he was launching it. He was all boat.

48:18Yeah, that's ridiculous. Alright, I'm gonna give you a uh a seventh grade spelling word. Okay. Okay. Mysterious.

48:33I think I got it though. Let's go. M Y S T E R I O U S.

48:42You got money. You got money. Uh-oh. But I I just feel I feel a certain way about this next one. Okay. Ordinarily. Oh. Punishing you. Yes. Wow.

48:59Ordinarily.

49:00Ordinarily.

49:02See, that's what I'm saying. Cause ordinary, ordinarily, they so close.

49:08Let me tell you, I know we get the lesson. Cause when you start looking up in the face, you searching for God to help you. When God ain't coming to save you right now. Ordinarily. Ordinarily.

49:19Oh, uh, O-R-D-I-N A-R I L.

49:36Why? Hey young, can we do the tri the the the applause track?

49:42Yeah, do the applause track. You did that, dog.

49:47That was difficult. You know what? We're not doing no more. We're gonna end on a good note.

49:50I'm good.

49:52You did a great job.

49:53Hold on, hold on, because I don't know if you you yeah, we gotta end on a high note with you too, young. I'm gonna give you an easy one. Come on, don't do that. I'm gonna give you an easy one, yo. I'm gonna give you easy one. Easy for me. I'm telling you, this one should be easy. Separate.

50:17There you go. Told you we ended on a good note, yeah. I knew you was gonna get it though. Yeah, I we done. Now we done. We done. We done. Yeah, let's argue.

50:27Yeah, because yeah, yeah. I'm hot, and I'm gonna take my jacket off, yeah.

50:32Yeah.

50:33Separate.

50:35Separate.

50:36Yeah. Boom. For those who don't know, let's argue. During the let's argue segment, for those who are listening to the podcast and not watching the podcast, the Let's Argue segment. We have a group of cards here that says Let's Argue. We read a question that's on the uh card. When if I read the question, Black gets to choose his side, and then I have to choose the opposing side. When I select the card, Black uh when you select the car, I get to choose the first side, and he chooses the opposing side. So we have to argue about it.

51:06And the question is And these don't sometimes we don't agree with the point.

51:11Yes, we don't, but we have to argue it no matter what. Okay. So here's the question Black, should you date potential? Why or why not?

51:21Oh Dang, you know that's tough? That's super tough. But I'm gonna answer it. No, you shouldn't date potential. I don't feel like you should date potential when it comes to um a man dating a woman because I think women learn very early on what they are, who they are, and what they want to be. Way more than men. I think the women's mind grows, you know, the the the according according to uh science, they are more mature at a quicker age. Um they are more disciplined, all of these things. So I think that women get to know who they are way quicker than men do. So you know, she is who she is when I meet her. But when I say she is who she is, meaning that she's she's working at getting where she wants to go. And she has the values and the morals and the ethics that she's going to build upon to get to where she has to go. It's not like she, you know, I'm looking at her and she has nothing. She has foundation that I know she's gonna build upon.

52:41So you're saying you sh should I think this is you just so you are shooting you. What did you start with?

52:52I said you should you shouldn't.

52:54You shouldn't.

52:55That's what I said you I said you shouldn't.

52:57Okay. You like that. I understand what you're saying though. Okay, as far as what so I have to say you should.

53:02You should date date potential. We're gonna have a conversation after this. Go ahead. Go ahead.

53:08Um Yeah, you definitely should date potential. I think people grown, evolved, change, develop, you know, I know that when I got into a relationship very early, I'm a I'm a completely different um person. And my uh wife of 20 years, uh, she likes to joke and say, I've uh I I I I dated potential.

53:38Um you dated potential? Oh, okay.

53:42You know, because I was from Fordville, man. I was a little rocky. What does that mean? It means that I didn't have a lot. It meant that you know, she was dating a dude who ain't have a car, who didn't have a lot of like resources, but the little bit I did have, you know, I share it. Um so I am a huge advocate. Well, I'm not a huge advocate, but I definitely would date potential if someone was at a particular point and I saw the beauty in them. Yeah, yeah, why not?

54:16I boom. So the question is, what is potential? Because, you know, potential to me sounds like, you know, you so you were Vic back in the day. Like when I'm when I'm saying this, I mean you had ambition, you had drive, you were working towards something, you were working towards a goal at that particular age with vigorance and you know what I'm saying, all of that. That was wrong, that was a wrong word. I don't know.

54:47Vigorance is a word. Okay, well, with it.

54:51Yeah, I want to say V-I-G-O-R-A-N-C-E. Right? But I I just like you were attacking your goals at that stage. So would that be considered potential? Potential to me means that, oh, I know that he got something in him. But you know what I'm saying? I feel like all he needs is, you know, time or energy or whatever.

55:16So that's a yeah.

55:17That's a yeah, what?

55:18You would you should date potential.

55:22No, you don't understand. I'm I'm I gave you two different things. So what I'm saying is I don't think a young person that is so you have two different types of young person. You got a young person who that's not going to school, you know what I'm saying, don't have any kind of idea of what they're gonna do in the future, no desires or whatever, but they're talented. You know what I'm saying? They could play in the in in the league, you know what I'm saying, or they're mind they're great at math, you know what I'm saying, but they don't do anything. Then you have a young person who is going to school, getting A's and B's, all of this type of stuff, you know what I'm saying? But of course, he doesn't have millions of dollars and stuff like that. Like, which one would be considered dating potential? Who why? Because at that stage, that dude is doing top, he he is chasing, he's he's he's you just described that both of them have potential. You just you described it, but but someone is is actually acting on the work and the other one isn't.

56:26I think that's that's a matter of opinion.

56:28Well, if that's the case, then we all are potential.

56:30That's the whole point of the question. That's why you keep proving my point, man. You gotta stay on your you gotta stay on your side, bro.

56:37Nah, I just think that that's a conversation because you know man, let me like you want me to argue your side.

56:42Nah, nah, don't try to show me up, bro. Don't try to show me up. You gotta stay on your side. If you were staying on your side, you say something like, nah, you don't date potential, man. As a grown man, where I'm at right now, somebody gotta be where they at. I ain't gonna date no girl who not, you know what I'm saying? Who not what? Who is not kind, who's not loving and gentle. I'm not waiting for you to be that. Like, nah, you gotta be that. You can have the potential to be kind, like, oh, they working on themselves. Nah, you need to be yourself. Come on, man. You can try that. I just had to do that because of the way you just showed out of me. What smell it be?

57:17I had to show that I had some intelligence.

57:28A man says that if his girl expects him to pay all the bills, he expects sex regularly. If she's not in the hood, if she's not in the mood, he reasons that sometimes he's not in the mood to pay the bills. Is he out of line?

57:47Hey, yo. That calls you crazy. I swear you always give me the crazy drink, y'all.

57:53Uh let me read it again.

57:54Yeah, go ahead. A man says that if his girl expects him to pay all the bills, he expects sex regularly. Give it up. Even if she's not in the mood. He reasons that sometimes he's not in the mood to pay the bills. Is he out of line?

58:09He's completely out of line, dog. You're gonna have to argue this other side. You finna sound like nobody be crazy for you. Yeah, he launched it. Oh, you can't. I can see your brain warming up. Yeah, hey, you launching, young.

58:32But that's that whole piece around like men want to pay the bill because they want to dominate and control women. Yeah, how you gonna control that woman's body? What if she just don't if she don't want to? It's just like men, you don't always wanna, you know what I'm saying, get it in. Like, come on. Especially when you get out.

58:47It ain't like you always want to just uh yeah, nah, dog, let's let's just chill and talk.

58:54That's when you get older.

58:56That's where you get have a good conversation. Like, what come on, yeah?

59:02But but no, yo, you can't control a woman's body just because you pay the bills. That's wild, yo. That's on some old slave catcher, like you know what I'm saying? That's some wild, that's wild business. No, dog. And if you think like that, young, you lunching.

59:17That's crazy that you just threw that thing in there. If you think like that, then you lunching, knowing that I gotta argue this. So I'm putting this right here so that y'all know what the hell this part of the show is. Hell yeah, boy. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. If I'm paying all the bills, if I'm paying all the bills, you know what I'm saying? You sitting at home, you you yeah, uh, and I'm I'm I'm probably giving you money to go. You know what I'm saying? Get your hair, your makeup, your nails done, you gonna shopping and all of that. Yeah, when I come home, when I come home and I'm and I need something, yeah. Be ready to supply, be ready to give it to me. If I turn over and I pap you on the butt, it's like, come on, you give it to me. Hell yeah, hell yeah, but y'all, you see the cop.

1:00:07You can't do that, y'all. I had to do that so many times, y'all.

1:00:10All right, I but yeah, yeah. So you stick it to it. Nah, it's not my opinion, y'all. That's but that's the argument. That's my side of the argument. Don't do that, y'all.

1:00:20You said pat her on the butt.

1:00:22But I do that already. I'm pat on the butt. Yeah.

1:00:26Hey, y'all, that's been cool, man. I appreciate that conversation.

1:00:29Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Um this is dope, man. This is dope. We one episode away from from finishing our season up.

1:00:37First season, man.
